How long does distemper live in the environment?
I have a puppy right now I’m fostering that we think had distemper. She’s going to her new home in a few weeks and I was considering getting a new puppy in January. How long does distemper live in the environment?
How important are distemper and rabies shots for a kitten?
When we adopted our little boy they told us he still needed to finish the distemper series (they’re not done yet) and get a rabies shot.
We haven’t gotten to it yet. He’s a strictly indoors kitten.
I was just wondering if its absolutely necessary, to get these shots, because I’m not too sure. Thanks in advance.
Distemper shots are very important. Rabies shots are usually only required if the cat is going to be outdoors but some vets won’t treat an animal that hasn’t had a rabies shot. And in some locales rabies shot are required for all pets.
Just bear in mind that rabies and distemper are both fatal in cats. We haven’t had a case of rabies in over 25 years where I live. I paid extra to have my three animals vaccinated anyway. Had to wait three days for the vaccine to be delivered to the vets.

There are no good treatments for the infection. They might be able to give steroids to help with the brain swelling and some antibiotics for secondary infections.
If the dog is having tics whining and seizures, she should be euthanized. Distemper is usually fatal. IT is a very rare disease now because of the available vaccine. I remember back in the 60s, 70s when dogs suffered slow painful deaths.

You wait at least a month before you adopt another puppy. Contaminated objects and living areas should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected with a 1:30 bleach-water solution.
If the mother cat had distemper shots, the kitten should be immune – has she been exposed to it? It could be any number of things, but that’s a topic for discussion *before* you run into a problem, not Now!
One person said “if a vet is not an option, neither is living”. Meaning your kitten will die. You MUST get that kitten to a vet immediately. This forum is no place to learn how to tube feed or force feed a kitten, what to do if it has FIP or some other deadly disease. It’s no place for home remedies except perhaps for behavioral problems.
Another person offered a very positive suggestion – contact the ASPCA for help. Ask your vet if you can make a payment plan. *Anything* – but get that kitten to a vet.

My kittens, who are 13 weeks old, had a distemper vaccination at 8 weeks and then again the other day. The vetrinarian suggested that they come back in two weeks for another distemper booster (this would be their 3rd in 4 months). Is this really necessary? They have received two already. I care about my kittens, but shouldn’t two distemper vaccinations be enough?
Making up part of the so-called CORE vaccinations, a kitten needs two or three, dependant on the make. Some come in a set of two, others in a set of three. The Association of Feline Practitioners recommends Panleukopenia every three years, if the very latest ones are used.
Most vaccines are made as such that it needs to be boosted when the cat is one year old, after which one can stagger the frequency of individual ones based on things like risk factors, except for rabies, which is required by law.
The relative risk of sarcomas are actually small compared to the benefits of vaccinating.
As someone else said, you plan for the worst and hope for the best. Even though some vaccines are not 100% effective, it’s still far better than nothing. Natural immunity always needs a hand.
Distemper is a nasty thing. I would far rather give it everything possible to make sure he does not get it, some added protection is still beter than not adding any.
